Eighteen of our titles reached us through a translator. We name every one of them, because somebody wrote those sentences too.
Our shelf card carries the translator’s name at the same size as the author’s. This is not a courtesy. A translation is a piece of writing with its own decisions in it, and those decisions are what you will actually be reading for the next three hundred pages.
Where two translations of the same book exist and both are in print, we try to stock both and to have an opinion. Sometimes the opinion is that the older one is better and harder to find.
