The Long Evening

Author talks.

An hour with a writer, and at least half of it questions from the room.

We invite writers whose books we are actually selling, usually within a month or two of publication, and we ask them to talk for twenty-five minutes rather than forty. The rest belongs to the room, because the questions are consistently better than the introduction.

Talks are free and unbookable. We put out chairs until we run out, and then people stand at the back, which is where the more interesting questions tend to come from.

Who is coming

What we ask of a visiting writer

Twenty-five minutes

Long enough to make an argument, short enough that nobody is performing endurance.

Read something

Even five minutes. People came partly to hear the sentences in the author’s own voice.

Stay for the signing

We keep it to half an hour and we bring you a drink.

Greek-language talks run in Greek, translated writers in whichever language the guest prefers, announced in advance so nobody is caught out.
